Colouring in as creative restoration for peace and tranquility.

Colouring in pages, colouring in pencils

As adults we are constantly met with life’s complexities, alarm clocks and to do lists. There is always something to do or some place to be, right? So how do we know when the busyness of life becomes too stressful, anxiety inducing and unbalanced? For one, we are most likely to feel it in our body (tension), our mind (negative loop patterns), health (disrupted sleep patterns or low energy) and our emotional health (feeling unhappy or stressed).

Stress and anxiety are a part of life and our fight flight response (sympathetic nervous system) have purpose and place in certain situations. In its extreme think saber-tooth tiger, or grizzly bear on the run and headed your way. It is when our whole life becomes one big knotted ball (or so it seems) that we become overwhelmed with stress and our anxiety starts spilling into our day to day activities. If this state of being persists for long periods of time patterns start to form and what was once considered abnormal is identified as a normal state of being. To be able to identify how we feel and what we need means we can creatively deliver the medicine needed to balance our state of being - rest and digest. That’s the kind of power that can intersect a negative loop pattern and reestablish a path of strength to do what’s right for oneself, make good decisions for ones state of being/ health and meet life’s adversities with a sense of curiosity and nurtured rejuvenation.

In Art Therapy we often talk of nurturing the ‘Inner Child’ and it is said that if we can identify those little joys that nurtured us as a child, it is most likely to calm and bring a smile of happiness to us as an adult.
